I recently acquired a Bolex DA and so I have been fiddling around with it, learning how it operates, and seeing its limits...One of the things I was testing was how high it would go...I tested out a 300w halogen and I was amazed that it projected everything perfect, absolutely no warping/burning of the notched title frame...I don't think I will run the projector all the time with that hot a lamp, even though the original lamp was a 400w incandescent, but I was really impressed, and finally believe 100% that even with its drawbacks (such as the stopping on a black screen)the Bolex truly is the only choice for running a notched film for a large audience....

Bill sadly the Bolex is in the repair pile at the moment. There are 2 x nylon gears inside it and one of them stripped, so i am awaiting on a re-cut brass gear to replace it and get the machine running again.
I am about a week or two away from making a video of me running an Edison Home Kinetoscope, so then I can add 22mm to the home formats making the home capabilities the following:
4.75mm/8mm/Super 8/9.5mm/16mm/22mm/28mm (with 9.5 and 17.5 optical sound almost ready to go as well)
And for the record I did a presentation on 4.75mm in Austin Texas that was video-taped and is being edited to put online...

Dino, Your post about the Bolex was very interesting, but I didn't understand the bit about stopping on a black screen? MIKE

Michael, perhaps I made it more confusing, but basically what I meant was a "blank" screen where the shutter stops in front of the gate blocking any image from being projected, so you have to turn the inching knob and get the shutter out of the way to see the notched title.

Hi, Interested to hear about your Bolex DA. From the review of the late Gerald Mc Kee's book "Home Cinema" You have a 1937 model DA which he states is prone to stopping with the shutter closed at notched titles. Shame about the stripped gear wheel, Hope Martyn is able to help you out. I have an earlier PA and have converted it to 24volt 150 watt lamp A1/216. It is probably the best machine for showing notched title films on a decent sized screen. Best wishes Ken Finch.

Ken, yep this is the one that (for whatever reason) stops usually just after the title...Well the film stops OK but the shutter doesn't....I am hoping that between Martyn and I we can figure out a solution for the broken gears as he has some broken ones as well....I leave tomorrow to do a presentation on 22mm (Edison Home Kinetoscope) in Boston, and then when I get back I go to Berkeley to do a 9.5 film show at Gerald Santana's film club the night before i see Brownlow's NAPOLEON! ! !! !!
