  • Movie magnetic does it again!

My recently aquired print of The Terminator, Derann print, 4X600' was near perfect in evey respect except that reel one was suffering fom a stripe degradation, worn through or flaking away. I sent this print to Moviemagnetic to have the original stripe removed and new tracks laid.
I also sampled their recording capabilities. I was both surprised and satisfied with the Terminator reel. You can't describe how these new stripes breath new life into the print. It sounds even better than brand new. Great work Alberto!

Nice to read your good story Burton All the films I've had done with the great Alberto have been given a new lease of life as well and I seem to achieve really high levels nicely on the 0 avoiding distortion. Yes also heard the new sound dubbing from MM is very good indeed and great to have more people offering dubbing services which is great news for sustaining S8. A couple of other guys in the UK are also doing dubbing and its all good news for our hobby.
Enjoy Arnie a wonderful movie for your collection.

How much did it cost to re-stripe and re-record the 600'?

I can't really answer your question because the Terminator reel was sent along with 2 full features for. Alberto to work on as well. Contact Moviemagnetic for current prices and services available.

Don't forget to factor in the shipping costs. Honestly, his services are not too highly priced. Well, they weren't when I had my work done, but it's the shipping that really takes a bite out of you. It was around a hundred dollars, just for shipping it back to me, which Alberto seemed puzzled as to why I would balk at that, but for some folks like me, that's a big chunk of money, so please ask him as to how much it will cost back and forth. To his credit, Alberto is very honest about the shipping costs.

Alberto uses UPS. My Canada Post Priority shipment to him took 2 weeks. When he returned UPS, 4 days. I know how I will ship now!

I will say in defense of Alberto that, if the shipping cost is not an issue for you, then go ahead and use his color treatment service. It is not perfection, nor does it claim to be, but it will breathe new life into your fading prints.

Osi could you upload some photos of ‘The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams’ that you had treated by Alberto so that forum members can assess how effective the treatment is?

Burton, am I right in thinking you normally do your own rerecordings? Was there any particular reason you decided to let Alberto do your rerecord in this instance

Phil, I'd love to, but I am on the lowest end of being able to give anyone really good screenshots of anything. I am on my cellphone and can't do anything about it for a few days, but I did upload a video of the first three or so minutes of the treated film. The good return of color is seen here and there, but that video really doesn't do it justice, as my FLIP camera seems to want to lean to red constantly, even on LPP films. I'd really love to get a good digital camera to make some good videos! Could someone put up a link to that video for me?

...I ASKED for the recording service on this order to sample and compare the sound quality to what I am able to achieve at home with DVD and sound mixer. Alberto's work on My Terminator reel was excellent!

Thanks Doug! The color doesn't go from reddish and then back to OK color on the actual film. All the color is of the same decent level. The only problem with my Grizzly, is one of original film elements. Some sections of the film have good color, other whole sections apparently had mediocre color at best to begin with, which is no fault of Alberto.

Same goes with my 2001 print I sent for O.R.S. The treatment will work wonders IF there are colors present under the red cast and the print didn't have any other inherent issues. My 2001 was a feature where the 8X400' where not the same film stock and some reels had a Green cast only to be revealed after the O.R.S. treatment. These were from lab issues when the print was first released and printed on different stocks. I had a feeling the print looked more than just red. The overall result did not turn this print
into anything more than a much more improved classic in my collection. My question to forum members : Is there an LPP 2001 available on Super 8?

It certainly sounds like you are happy with Alberto's rerecording service Burton. Rerecording is something I would like to attempt in the future, I think as much as the equipment involved is important (for obvious reasons), the audio source is just as important. Many DVDs and blu rays have very weak audio compared to laserdisc and in some cases hi-fi VHS
