Thanks Panayotis, as i said, while it's a serious problem, you also need to remember the Dr who discovered it, (who died), was also silenced by the authorities, as per the news, had that Countries leaders has come clean at the start instead of trying to hide it and make that great Dr sign a statement to shut him up it may not have got to where it is. I stick by what i said. Thats a fact, not me saying it,
All of it, the panic buying going on in this Country and elsewhere will simply cause more problems. The officials have already said four out five people who may get this will recover. At the moment, no one can say what will happen but if everyone is sensible and covers up when they cough or sneeze and washes there hands it will all help. Unfortunatly, look at many of hte dirty sods arounds you that cough and sneeze and never cover up. You cant educate wood!

This Article (click here) explains why we are at least a year, more likely 2 years away from a vaccine.

The risk increases with the age. Children seem (for a yet, unknown Reason) not infected at all while the death rate is about 15 % if you're over 80. The French news seemed more optimistic about a vaccine (as we're not starting from nothing) but nobody can guarantee anything.

Unfortunately there is a report today of a child infected with this at Alder Hey hospital, no age reported though, so might not be very young. I don't know what ages are treated there.

                    Report from an "epicenter"

I live less than 10 miles from the now infamous Kirkland care center in Washington state. In my local supermarket there are no bare shelves, and there is plenty of toilet paper. I think hand sanitizer, gloves and masks remain hard to find. I am disappointed that I missed the run on stores....

Osi, what a bad threat to start - and I mean that.

I have worked for NHS England for 21 years and can tell you all that people are being reactive - I am a professional person speaking here.

Its an unknown virus but its not a big problem health wise unless you have a compromised immunity (like extreme old age or other issues)...its the business implications that really worry the world.

My goodness...I have been a mental health specialist for 21 years...these kind of posts are not productive or encouraging they just cause panic which is the last thing we need. And sorry Osi, you are not qualified to speak or advise in health.

Best to all and from NHS England's perspective...dont panic "Mr Mannering".

                      Mark

I surely pray that Mark is correct in his statements, but the numbers do not back him up. As of now the actual death rate of 100,000 cases is over 3,500 people, or 3.5%. In the USA alone this would mean over 6 million deaths if the spread continues unbounded. It has even reached the Faroe Islands, which is about as remote as you can get.
I think Osi's post is very timely. It prompted me to run down to Publix and buy some Clorox wipes and hand sanitizer, which have now all been cleared from the shelves.

I would never underestimate the dangers with "any virus" no matter what age you are. Years ago the kids caught chickenpox, for them it was a two day wonder, shortly after I got it from them, much to there amusement. But as an a adult its a lot worse, I remember over the next few days the feeling of the virus and spots spreading upwards and finally one night I woke up with the feeling like my scalp was moving. It had had spread to the top of my head, all within three days. The thing is thankfully and very quickly my immunity kicked in, and within a couple of days it was gone along with all those nasty spots..."completely vanished"

The reason I mention this, and to this day I still feel, that if your immunity did not kick in for any reason, and you don't have to be old either you could be dead in 24 hours, although that was 20 years ago I have never forgotten how quickly a virus can take over.

PS. Although that was over 20 years ago, anytime my daughter turns up and has a cough....I disappear REAL quick

Facts about novel coronavirus and how to prevent COVID-19

A summary from my local newspaper, Seattle Times:

What has me concerned, maybe needlessly, is that while everyone is hoping for an eventual vaccine, it is my understanding that the common cold is also in the corona virus family, and nobody has ever been able to come up with a common cold vaccine. What leads medical professionals to think that the corona virus will be any different?
