I was always wondering that we had so many shorts from Laurel & Hardy, WC Field, Three Stooges, Our gang, etc made in 1930s.

How did people see those shorts at that time? in the cinemas or TVs? I guess TV was not popular yet at that time? and did cinema's show only have 20 minutes show?

so how did those films gain popularity

They were made for the cinema but did gain popularity on TV years later. The typical movie going experience back then included newsreels, cartoons and short subjects. The trailers came after the feature. That is why they are called trailers.

Those shorts were intended to be ephemeral -- little did the filmmakers know they would still be popular some 80 years later.

If I remember correctly, there's a scene in Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" that shows a theater with promotional posters for the Hal Roach Studios featuring Charley Chase and others.
