Several years ago I bought a brand new print at eBay which has never been screened and which is still in shrink wrap. The 3 reels cutdown of DAS BOOT (The Boat) from piccolo film Germany. Until today I cannot open the shrink wrap and screen it, because it is like kind of a holy grail for me.
Do You also own a brand new Super 8 title from the 80's which You can't screen? Would be interesting for me to know.

Personally, i see no point at all in having such items if they are never going to be enjoyed for the purpose they were created.
To have something still sealed that requires opening before it can be used, to me means you effectively still dont have this particular item if you are frightened of opening it and then using it.

I don't own any 1980s releases that I can't screen, but I do own one or two that I've still never got round to screening, believe it or not!

Oliver if you are fancy with the seal (shrink wrap), open it and screen it.

Buy a shrink wrapper machine and re-seal it. [Wink]

For my serious side, I will screen it, unless I have 2 copies.

I have once opened the sealed mini feautuee Ice Zebra from Picollo, thinking I would get the beautifull colors compared to my MGM versions.

Eventually I found it had the same fade...so I was kind like a broken hearted man who had been falling in love to a girl and found out I was cheated tearfully... [Razz]

I own 2 prints and the other one was screened and is brillant...
The new one was a bargain so I couldn't resist to buy it.
In the end there's no need to open it.
And it smells exactly like the new films from 40 years ago...

Talking about Das Boot you have there, I would like to have it. So your brilliant color copy is on AGFA or just a good Kodak SP (which eventually will turn too)?

Here is my controversial view. Remember this is only MY opinion.
Brand new sealed in the shrink wrap means nothing at all to me.
I just cannot see the point of buying a film and not watching it. Thats the whole point of this hobby isn't it? to view the movies we purchase.While the value is going a bit scilly, all be it thanks to flea bay" they are not antiques are they?

Oliver, having bought your favourite film surely you must view it and enjoy it. It is 3 x 400 cut down so at present all you are doing it looking at the boxes. Surely you just as well view images from the movie online and not have the film?

I could understand this if you own a projector that is renowned for scratching films such as a crappy old Royal or a Heurtier Stereo 42, (mentioned on here), But if you own a good quality machine then you only live once my friend, we are a very long time dead so treat yourself up and view your favourite film on your home screen. I cannot see any point what so ever in just letting it sit there. Be proud of film and show it off. TONIGHT

The same topic but different object is also happening now.

People buy vinyls (because of the new trend...and felling cool?), let the vinyls still sealed and listen to the MP3 instead.

So the idea of buying vinyls is only to get the format...not to listen the music.

Andrew - how is this different to you owning two copies of films? In fact Oliver's print is probably gathering less dust than your second copies, because it's still sealed! [Big Grin]

Oliver,

If it`s one of your favorite print, I don`t see why you shouldn`t have two prints. I personally don`t have any unsealed films. A few years ago, I did own an unopened Super 8 film but I opened it up to watch it.

I would ignore the criticism you might receive for keeping a unopened copy. You already have a copy that is opened and being used. Perhaps if you ever do pass that unopened copy to another collector, they will be able to enjoy the film by watching it on a pristine print.

No...
I collect celluloid for 40 years now and it is my preferred medium.

To me this original sealed cutdown (which is my only one) is a treasure;
if not to others, it is okay.

I bought a lot of features when eBay first began. I had a great job, lots of money, no children, and could therefore buy everything I'd always wanted to buy as a kid (and more) that of course I couldn't afford when I was little. Plus features weren't as expensive on eBay then as they are now.

Of the features I have, I have watched PINOCCHIO, SOUND OF MUSIC (Scope), REVENGE (Walton 4 reels), DALEKS INVASION EARTH (Walton 4 reels), VAMPIRE CIRCUS (Walton 4 reels) and PLEASE SIR (Walton 4 reels)
Plus METEOR (3-reel), CONFESSIONS OF A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR (2 reels) and WATERSHIP DOWN (600ft).

After those initial screenings I just never managed to get the time to put on a show. Getting married and having a child made free time harder to find. Plus I always edited Theatre openings, commercials, trailers and have a short and intermission in every screening. So it was very time consuming. I even printed out a souvenir booklet for each screening and had Home Cinema Membership cards printed. And I bought original quad posters for the films I was screening. I get exhausted thinking about it.

Thankfully I seem to have more free time now and have friends excited to see my movies on the big screen.

So my list of feature films yet to watch are (in no particular order):

Plus I always say I'm going to stop buying prints, but every now and again I see something that I feel I have to buy. Currently on the lookout for WARLORDS OF ATLANTIS.

Boy! "Das Boot" would be a hard film to do a 3X400ft digest of. If you ever get around to opening it, please give us a review of it, as I'd LOVE to hear it, as I am quite fond of
that film!

I have quite a few Disney 200 footers that are still sealed, I have them already opened and watched as well. I have a part 1 Derann Viva Las Vegas that's never been opened, Airplane 3x400 still sealed, Jungle Book and Snow White features still sealed, I'm sure I have a few others too, one day I'll play them I guess, Mark

Not sealed, but there are a few features in my collection that I have not watched in their entirety....The Godfather Part 2 in particular.

While I don`t have any sealed prints I do have quite a few used Super 8 features/cutdowns that I bought but still havent screened: Citizen Kane, Ugetsu Monogatari, Witchcraft through the Ages, Hunchback of Notre Dame(1939) 2x600ft, The Only Son,and Odd obbsession.
