Just won an interesting item on Ebay. A two reel digest of "Goodbye Emmanuelle" put out by Columbia. I had never seen this release before. It looks like they just used the same cover art and pasted a "Goodbye" title over the original Emmanuelle cover. You can see right through it. Guess they were cutting cost. I guess these Emmanuelle films were good sellers on 8mm for Columbia to release four different reels in a short period of time. I guess they were kind of "guilt-free" porn than you could buy in those days. I found the original Emmanuelle quite tame and well-made. I guess that's what they meant by "X was never like this" - a great tag line, by the way.

Hi Brian,

I've always been curious about these films, ever since SelecTV had an "Adult Theater" advertisement for it when I was a kid. I would see it (the commercial) at my friends house that had the premium channel. However, it was basically a UHF channel that was scrambled and I remember many "neighborhood kids" trying watch the scrambled version of it when it came on very late at night.

I forgot about it until I started collecting Super 8 and I'm still curious about it. I've seen the Columbia titles on U.S. eBay but, never a Marketing print. I read that it was intentionally shot with soft focus and that it features a King Crimson song, how is the color and do they use the music on these digests?

It is an interesting title. It earned an "X" rating, but nothing beyond that, and certainly not a XXX rating. it's actually quite tame (I'm referring to the original Emanuelle).

Now "Deep Throat", well, that's another whole can O worms.

The X rating wasn't always just for porn, as many of us know. For instance, "Fritz the Cat", an animated feature by Ralph Bakshi was X rated, and it was only animated sex. "Midnight Cowboy" was originally rated X as well. I believe that the unedited "Last Tango in Paris" also garnered an X rating, mostly because of it's depiction of anal intercourse.

I think it's a shame when these kind of films get an X rating. While I understand the need to protect the public, (and I really don't see the need to actually visually, graphically, represent these kind of things on film, much better to leave it to the audiences "naughty little minds"), many people will just pass aside on these "X" rated films, when there is in most cases, very good film-making going on besides the very few momments that actually garner the "X" rating.

Now, XXX, that just needs a rating of course.

The Emmanuelle ( two m's here) 8mm digests were mega sellers for Columbia and I believe went to many print runs,the two original digest were issued in. Standard cardboard boxes and then reissued in Columbia's deluxe plastic cases. The first digest was also actually issued in Columbia's generic yellow classics boxes.

Emmanuelle 2 aka Joys of a Woman was issued as a 400ft digest and a complete 5 x 400ft feature by Marketing Film for release in the USA only.

The digest had held it's colour well but the feature is now badly faded like most Marketing feature releases.

A 4 x 200ft release was also released in France and some other territories.

Both Emmanuelle 1 & 2 are very classy soft core erotic movies,well photographed and with beautiful musical scores.

Mystery solved. I received the Goodbye Emmanuelle print today and it's actually stuck from a Piccolo negative and dubbed into English. Columbia must have been so desperate to release more "Emmanuelle" titles they just did a deal with Piccolo and used their other box art and slapped a sticker on the front that says "Goodbye Emmanuelle." The print is masked and has great music by the now very popular Serge Gainsbourg. Unfortunately the color is completely red and the print is washed out so it's going back to the seller. Darn...

The color of the german Piccolo prints of Goodbye Emanuelle are great.
I had in the past a print on low fade stock. Maybe it´s worth to save the english track, so you can dubbe later a german print if you get one.

Oemer - Yes, I'm sure Columbia made the english prints themselves. I don't think any Piccolo prints I have had looked faded like this. It's borderline unwatchable. Now, I will have to keep my eye on German Ebay to find the German release and dub the audio.

Yes, Osi, you're right... no tan lines anywhere! It's still going back on the hopes of finding correct "flesh" tones.

I'm actually reading Sylvia Kristel's autobiography right now and she had a pretty interesting life - teenage beauty queen, sudden fame, then sinking into drugs, etc... Can you believe the original Emmanuelle played in one Paris movie theater for over a decade straight?! That must be a world's record.

A little OT, but.

The record for longest showing of a film in one city is held by "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in Stockholm.
The premiere was in february 1976 and it was not removed untill the summer of 1987. In february 1986 parts of cast and crew was in Stockholm to celebrate the event.
On a personal note I can add that this is one of very few films that I have shown (professionally, in a cinema) in both 16MM & 35MM.

It was a dream in the 70´s to watch this erotic classics. Unfortunately I was to young and I never watched this movies in the 70´s on the big screen (I was born in 1965).
Few years ago my childhood dreams came true and I get few 35mm prints of Films, I never watched in the Cinema and I was curious about them for many many years. This lot of prints include: Emmanuele (the original), Story of O, Deathrace 2000.
I was not disappointed as I run them this days.
They are anyhow childhood memories.

By the way, my 35mm print of Emmanuele cost me less than half of the price of this one on ebay. I think $190 is to much.

Yes, the stories of porn stars and they're end is usually quite sad. The "actors" get addicted to the money and so they allow themselves to usually end up in more and more degrading forms of porn. Many end up in prostitution or worse and end up drug adicts or worse.

However, there are humorous after stories. One female porn star in Australia left porn and ended up hosting a kids show! I think it was (or is still) called "Susa" "It's fun-believe-able".

I just thought (after the fact) it was funnier than hell that a person went from porn to kids show host! It was on in the US (or at least in my home towen here) for about a week until parents groups realized who it was and next week it was off.

Kind of a shame, if you think about it, as I didn't even know what thwe actresses past was. The show was corny, thats all.

Osi,

I believe you might be thinking of the Brazilian kid show host Xuxa. An English version of her show was put out in the early 90's. I shot an interview with her at that time and I remember she and Pele were an item.
