I have a question for the experienced collectors here, and mr. Everette in particular. Would it be possible to create a list of all the "classic epics" that are on 8mm?

By silent epics I reckon all "epic" films that exceed two hours in length from the black/white silent era, and what format it was released on.

The reason for making this list is simple, I am very interested in these old films, and would actually go as far as saying that getting a hold of most of these old epics is the prime part of my collection. Having gotten a hold of the famed Bolex 18-5, I now have the ability to project both 8mm formats aswell, so a list of films with format, for reference, would be great [Smile]

EDIT:
The list has now been expanded to include other notable films from the silent era, and added blank titles for you to help me out with ;-)

Updated to list to include other silent "classics". If you feel any films are missing, list them in the same formatting that I have done, and I will edit them into the top post.

Doug, is this a thread that could qualify as sticky?

That link didn't work for me ...

A question on 9.5mm ... Are they normally hand cranked or motorized?

Seen a few hand cranked ones on eBay and wondered how the h**l you could make that run smoothly :-)

Christian ...

I remember seeing just recently a NIles print of "Nosferatu" (1922). Please note however, it came in a Niles box and I couln't see the title on the lid, so I can't be absolutely certain on thyat title.

I wonder if "Vampyr" would be considered a silent film? It was shot as a silent, but released in both a silent and sound version, and was released on standard 8mm. I used to have a print, but If my collection serves me, it was re-titled, "Castle of Fear". Beautiful, moody, atmospheric film!

I think they are spring-wound, much like the cameras or old grammophones, you sort of "charge" the spring when cranking, and it "outputs" at a stable speed.

JC, do you have any info on who released the various prints you listed?

Edit:
List updated with your additions.

Hi Cristian,

The hand cranked projectors like the 9.5mm Pathe Baby don't have a clockwork type spring drive like you imagined. All they have is a heavy little balanced shutter that is really a flywheel.

As its being hand cranked by the operator this shutter/flywheel smooths out the running speed and eliminates picture jerkiness. You still have to hand crank at a steady speed, counting seconds as you go. When in good condition they rotate very smoothly and a steady picture is projected.

I like to play with these Pathe Babies and collect them when I can. There are now 6 here and slowly forming a small crowd of Babies. When time allows they will be converted to low voltage halogen lighting.

I will try to post a pic of them soon.

Vidar, re.9.5mm projectors. The original Pathescope Baby/Home Movie, Kid, Imp, Ace, were hand cranked as were some of the cheap "toy" ones. But all the Pahescope machines mentioned above were later available with motor and 300ft reel attachements. Smooth hand cranking is no problem for up to 12 minutes at a time! All the other Pathescope, and other makes of 9.5mm projectors are motor driven. What we have never had on 9.5mm is the dreaded "Self threading" devices. An insult to any self respecting projectionist!! It is the cameras that were clockwork driven. This applied to all the narrow gauges until battery driven cameras arrived on Super 8. Ken Finch.
