I was just curious how may hours you forum members log viewing films say for the whole week and if I fall in what would be considered normal?

I personally try and watch something every night if time & my schedule permits for a couple of hours each night so 14 hours per week is what I would estimate.

Maybe 4 hrs a week. I spend a lot of time on my PC checking for film work. Plus studying scripts for films when I get booked. Going to and from shooting sites etc.

Typically: a 200 footer plus a 400 footer, so something like a half hour. Maybe this will go to two 400 footers some nights.

The 400 footer above can be a single reel of a feature. Quite often I'll start a feature film Monday night and watch it all the way til Friday this way.

Maybe on the weekends I'll do a whole feature.

We demand a lot from these 35 year old machines, don't we? It's a sign of how well made they are they are still up to it.

My goodness....I only get to turn on the machines maybe one a week for a half hour or less. The only time I really can watch a feature is when I'm showing them at the local library.
Between work and home duties there's just no time.

Holy Smokes after reading a few of your responses it sounds like I have way too much time om my hands!

I'm fortunate though because my wife and I run a full time business out of our home which leaves me with more free time to run the projector. [Smile]

Basically I watch a film or two instead of watching TV.

I'm with you on that Steve I rarely watch TV and the only time I do watch TV is with the wife when we rent a DVD Movie on the weekend. She is complaining though that I'm spending too much time in the man cave. Sound familiar?

I try and watch a few on a friday night and also we now have a family( me ,partner ,son and my mum) film show on a sunday afternoon which will usally be a 400ft extract or 2 a 400ft cartoon reel and 400ft of home mad movies (not my own ones ive picked up never know whats on them ) would love to have more time as lots of great films to watch ,but shure once winter sets in more will be watched .

Some years ago we watched TV in the den and the living room and dining room were pretty much empty except when company showed up. Then I noticed that I could hide a pull down screen behind the curtains in the living room window and put projectors on the far end of the dining room table and have like a 20 foot throw. So this became my theater and stayed that way a few years.

One fine day (actually a hellish few months...) we renovated the first floor and made what had been the back porch part of this immense living room, dining room, kitchen, TV room complex.

The upshot of this is what had been my "cave" is now shared space. We abandoned the den to Thomas the Tank Engine, later Wii and now X-Box, and I have to timeshare screen time with my wife watching overweight brides picking out wedding dresses on Cable. (GOOD LORD! The dresses are all white!: eeny meeny miny moe!!)

So somehow by expanding the house we've made it effectively smaller. If I ever had a cave it's basically caved in!

The good news is when the entertainment center came up so did the stereo, and that was the start of my cinema sound system.

For me, I could pretty much give up TV entirely other than The Big Bang Theory!

Before I installed my permanent upstairs home theater I watched very little films because I did not have a permanent set-up and I had to lug everything out and set everything up which was time consuming. Now that I have a permanent set-up I find myself watching more films now.

And Steve my wife Kathy watches that same wedding show!

My setup is basically permanent because it's usually maintained ready to go. The only thing is when it needs to go back into living room/dining room mode the cabling gets stuffed under the china closet, the screen hides behind the curtains and the projectors go in the spare room.

-then the company is there and some amateur interior decorator just has to tell my wife "You really should put a couch in front of this front window!"

(Ummm...No!)

I don't understand a woman married more than 20 years wanting to watch wedding shows. To me that's like a long-haul trucker watching driver-ed. films. You got the license years ago, are you really going to learn anything useful?!

This is an interesting topic to see how much time other forum members spend watching films. I would say on average I probably watch 2 hours of films per week. Of course it fluctuates a bit. It does help that my wife and daughter both enjoy watching films as well.

Boy I'm really surprised by the responses indicating just how much little time is spent viewing films. Perhaps the difference is I watch both 8mm & 16mm formats. The summer is slow for my business so this is probably why I spend so much time viewing films or maybe it's because I'm abnormal? No wonder my wife keeps nagging me all the time. I think I will cut down my hours would then be a safe thing to do to keep the wife happy! [Smile]

Roger, it depends on the time on the year, for example now I have to wait until 10 pm for my room to be dark and in July (so very soon !) and August, I go abroad on holiday so no show at all during these two monts. Otherwise, several hours a week. I also spend some time cleaning and resplicing dammaged films, I try to have some old projectors fixed and serviced, so I have to bring them one by one to a repairman in Paris (of course I don't go specially for that but when I go I take a projector with me and bring back the other one) and I also shoot on film (in Spuer 8 and 9,5, seldom on double 8). That's in addition with visits to conventions, club projections and hunting on Ebay. All together, I realize that I spend some time in the hobby.

Digital projection of classic feature films about 5 nights a week, or approx 10 hours.
Super 8mm film projection about 2 hour per week.
Projector and film maintainous, about 1 hr per week.

but usually about 2-3hrs of film a week.

I do remember a few years ago of being called anti-social....always out playing with my films I was told...so I thought OK fine. I will spend more time inside with the family, however they tended to watch "I thought" to much rubbish on TV. I found the remote and changed it to the History channel...Travel Channel and the like, anyway that caused quite a stir, to the point my son would hide the remote. The end result of all this was, I went back to playing with my films and they got the TV back and to this day, never been called anti-social again. [Wink]

I usually watch any football match of interest to me on the digital projector so that's at least a couple hours every week.

Then I will always try to watch a Blu Ray modern or otherwise at least once a week, so there's another couple of hours minimum.

Finally film nowadays takes up all of the spare time I have when I am off shift and the wife is at work ha ha (Wife thinks I am nuts and won't have anything to do with it sadly). This must amount to at least 15 hours a week one way or another. This, like Paul, includes maintenance of both projectors and film for example; making new box art and covers, re-records, cleaning etc etc, as well as just finally sitting down to enjoy one or two in any given week.

Given that 15 hours a week appears to be way over most peoples allocated time slot so far to film alone, I guess I must have it bad I suppose!
