I wanted to start this thread to discuss W.C. Fields -- anything about him, but mainly to discuss his films and collecting them.

First up: YOU'RE TELLING ME.

Similar to the Marx Brothers ANIMAL CRACKERS, this film was in legal limbo for many years and was unavailable for viewing. Castle released a one-reel excerpt, MUCH ADO ABOUT GOLF, in the mid-1970. Universal 8 released a two-reel one, using the film's original title, later. I don't recall it being part of the MCA-TV releases that were shown on TV. It started showing up on Showtime, Cinemax, and AMC late 80's/early 90's.

Does anyone have any more info on the legal issues and when/how they were cleared up? It's a great Field's film, right up there with IT'S A GIFT, THE BANK DICK, and MAN ON THE FLYING TRAPEZE.

I have the two-reel abridgement, which includes the golf scene, so I assume that there is no additional footage in MUCH ADO ABOUT GOLF. Can anyone confirm?

Hi Joe,

I'm an entry-level WC Fields fan. I've become interested in the last few months, but have no prints to date!

If a Blackhawk "The Dentist" happens to cross my path, I'll probably go that way as at least a toe in the water.

Just have to see what shows up in CineSea and take it from there.

Fields-watcher since the days of WNEW-Tv (Channel 5 NY) - A collector might be bringing IT'S A GIFT to our show - I had collected all the existing records of WC, including my favorite, the Decca version - All the 8mm CASTLE FILMS series and choice books on hima nd his work (Curtis' is by far the best) - TCM recently screened several of his films, I have many on Super 8 and am an actor as he was, so top-fan here - Shorty

I haven't watched a lot of W. C. Fields movies...but I enjoy the few reels I have collected...The Dentist (400 ft. S8 Sound), The Pharmacist (400ft Std. 8 Silent), and Hurry, Hurry (400ft. 16mm). Fields' humor is less physical than Laurel & Hardy, but similarly he too at times seems oblivious to what's happening around him...just caught up in the moment. We ... the audience... sees what's happening or what's going to happen...but he doesn't. Even though I've watched these reels a dozen times...they still make me laugh.

GOLF - One of Castle's best - The YOUR TELLING ME rights reverted back to Paramount that I recall, then they were 9are) owned by another conglomerate - I'm sure Blu-Rays must be out on this - I don't keep up with the current trends much, as I will always prefer the film -

This may be part my fault Joseph, for bashing W C FIELD's....

I never disliked him before super 8's, but now that I have watched some of the films, I find him boring. That is just my take.
If anyone is interested in him, I have these in the for sale/trade section:
http://8mmforum.film-tech.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=005771

I am looking for sound blackhawk releases of little rascals that i don't have, 3 stooges i don't have, and perhaps any sound chaplins, buster keatons, charlie chase, monty banks etc.... We also like flip the frog cartoons:) Here is some of my list:
http://8mmforum.film-tech.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=005772

Just for the record, the excerpts of Fields I am not selling i like a lot. These include 'If I had a Million', 'Hurry, Hurry', and 'Circus Slickers'.

I must really out to lunch with wc fields, so don't take my opinion as anything. I mean, I recently read someone who said that 'Fatal Glass of Beer' is a fine example of one of Field's funniest films....If this is true, then i am at a loss. My kids almost cry when i run that one they dislike it so much- he hee.. I think one must really know the back story surrounding some of his plots!
Cheers,
Matt

ps: @steve- Steve, I have 'The Dentist' if you want to get your feet wet!

Noticed you listed CIRCUS SLICKERS as a sale, then you mentioned wanting to keep it, I was looking for a nicely-boxed second print, that and THE BIG THUMB - Odd thing about film collectors, certain tastes grow on you - Fields was subtle; He was of the stage (Ziegfeld and others), so his approach is scaled down, he was one of the best-clever artists, like Lloyd, his inventive nature was prime - Keep watching some of his other work and you'll gradually be worked into the scheme, so to speak - It took me a while to warm-up to several actors, but eventually it'll happen - Shorty

Thanks, Shorty -- any footage in MUCH ADO not in the 400' version? I used to watch on Channel 5, too, and his Universal releases on Channel 9 (WOR.)

All his Castle/U8 releases are worth getting:

Castle:
MUCH ADO ABOUT GOLF
THE BIG THUMB
CALIFORNIA BOUND
THE GREAT MCGONIGLE
HURRY, HURRY
THE GREAT CHASE
IF I HAD A MILLION
CIRCUS SLICKER (the box says SLICKERS but the on-screen title is singular)

UNIVERSAL 8:
YOU'RE TELLING ME
YOU CAN'T CHEAT A HONEST MAN
IT'S A GIFT (just combines THE BIG THUMB and CALIFORNIA BOUND)
IF I HAD A MILLION
THE BANK DICK
NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK
THE OLD FASHIONED WAY

You can make 2 nice nearly 600' versions by combining CIRCUS SLICKER with YOU CAN'T CHEAT AN HONEST MAN, as well as combining NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK with HURRY, HURRY.

Blackhawk had:
POOL SHARKS (silent)
SALLY OF THE SAWDUST (silent)
THE DENTIST
THE PHARMACIST
THE BARBER SHOP
THE FATAL GLASS OF BEER

The only "must have" from Blackhawk is THE DENTIST.

Various distributors released THE GOLF SPECIALIST -- recommended to die-hard fans and collectors only.

THE FATAL GLASS OF BEER is an acquired taste that many people haven't acquired -- but I like it. That was also available from Niles -- but Blackhawk probably had better quality. Only get THE DENTIST from Blackhawk -- top-notch quality, and un-cut -- not sure if Niles was un-cut.

I think that that was all that was released in Super 8. Castle also had ALICE IN WONDERLAND but I'm not sure if that had Fields' scenes.

I listed this in General Yak so we could talk about other gauges as well as VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray. I haven't seen them, but almost all of his sound films are available in a few box sets that were released several years ago. TCM showed a few of his movies several weeks ago, including YOU'RE TELLING ME.

I think the following movies are essential viewing -- all talkies:
THE DENTIST
YOU'RE TELLING ME
THE OLD FASHIONED WAY
IT'S A GIFT
MAN ON THE FLYING TRAPEZE
POPPY
YOU CAN'T CHEAT AN HONEST MAN
THE BANK DICK
MY LITTLE CHICKADEE
NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK

My favorite book on Fields is W.C. FIELDS -- A LIFE ON FILM, by his grandson, Ronald J. Fields, who, at 66 years old, is now W.C.'s doppleganger.
Ronald J. Fields

No, footage in Much Ado is in and of itself - the 400' is different - I have GOLF SPECIALIST (Niles), excellent, one of their best releases, not washy - They had a good neg on it - Had a 16 of the film years back - DENTIST, I'll have to say T-Bird's print is also top-notch, it has the Paramount (Clouds) opening as well - My favorite book, outside of Curtis' is WC FIELDS BY HIMSELF - Great information - I might add a film, seldom seen (except WNEW-5 years back), MRS. WIGGS OF THE CABBAGE PATCH

A word or 2 about YOU CAN'T CHEAT AN HONEST MAN, the full feature. I think this is one of Fields' best films, albeit brought down a little bit my the amount of screen time given to Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy. They were all put in this film to bank on the radio success of the Fields-McCarthy "feuds". It is here that I wish to digress.

Can someone tell me what the attraction was with a ventriloquist act on the radio? I mean -- you've got to be kidding me. Did they have magic acts on the radio, too, in those days?

Also, Bergen's lips moved. So how did he become arguably the most famous ventriloquist of all time?

I too have 3 W.C. Fields films:

on Standard 8mm
8.5mins HURRY HURRY W.C.FIELDS B/W 1941 - I have 2 copies - don't know why [Smile]

on Super 8mm
200ft W.C.FIELDS — IF I HAD A MILLION B/W SILENT

on 16mm
8.25mins THE GREAT CHASE – W.C.FIELDS B/W SOUND 1940

I used to also have The Dentist on 400ft Super8 B/W Sound but sold it as I didn't enjoy it,personally it had a bit too much "waffling on" i.e. talking nonsense in parts.

Oddly enough when I looked at my lists of what films I have of his I was surprised thats all i had!
But the ones I have are brilliant and maybe I should look for more!

Ahhh the film collector - always looking for more and more eh! [Smile]

For most of the Fields releases in 8mm you really need to have sound to fully enjoy them, but HURRY HURRY, THE GREAT CHASE, and IF I HAD A MILLION, and even THE GREAT MCGONIGLE should work pretty well as silents.

I'm surprised to hear negative comments about THE DENTIST. I always felt that if you didn't like THE DENTIST then you probably wouldn't enjoy any Fields.

Universal 8 continued to issue the Castle digests intact, with Castle on-screen titles, but repackaged the films with new boxes.
Plus: The new boxes were made out of durable plastic.
Minus: They redesigned the cover art which often showed a scene from a different movie!

I'm with you there, Joe. U-8 did the same thing with the A&C titles. They used pictures from entirely different films for various box art. Personally I've always disliked the new U-8 packaging. How hard is it to get someone to color in over a black and white still with crayons? I imagine it was a pretty inexpensive maneuver and a bad one at that. I have an appreciation for Fields, I enjoy the Castle cut downs and I think "The Dentist" is a novelty on many different levels. However, whenever I get Fields in a longer dosage than 20 minutes I tend to lose interest. Like beer, Fields is an acquired taste. You either love him or you don't. I'm the same way with Chaplin. Can't really last more than 20-30 minutes before getting the yawns.

The Castle boxes were not much more than colored b&w pics, either, but for some reason, whoever did them had a better sense of art since they look so much nicer.

You're right, Joe. The Castle box art was artists' renditions of classic stills, but at least they used stills from the movie within the box and the boxes are more collectible today than the ones from U-8. I often see empty cartons on Ebay actually selling just as neat curios. O'h and let's not forget those wonderful stick-on labels that after several minutes, days, weeks and years still need the air bubbles smoothed out. I occasionally still do it today with many of them. I'd love to meet the person that signed off on that quality control inspection year over year. Truly they had collectors' best interests in mind. Talk about simply marking time for a paycheck. In respect to Fields, however, the box art for his Castle titles were nicely done, I thought. I'm still trying to figure out the relevance to the title "The Big Thumb" since there's no reference to anyone's thumb in "It's A Gift".

Grocers used to be referred to as having "big thumbs" when they weighed something incorrectly by pressing their thumb down on the scale. Note that Fields leans on the scale in one scene when weighing an item.

Thanks, Joe. You've just answered a question I've been wondering about for nearly 40 years now.? Now how many people years ago would see this title on the shelves in camera stores and think to themselves "what a stupid title "?

I think it is worth giving a grade to the 2 major film companies that had the rights to Fields' movies. The grade takes into account quantity as well as quality. Did they capture the essence of Fields? Do the extracts give a good overview of his work? Did they miss any essential clips that one would normally include in a "best of" compilation?

Castle: B-
Universal 8: B+

Castle focused too much on car chase scenes, which, while well-done, was not the essence of Fields' humor. They missed out on some essential scenes from films they did excerpt, as well as ignoring altogether films from my essential list.

Universal 8 did a better job. They also included some chase scenes, but did a better job of covering his verbal humor. They only picked the films the Castle extracts covered, however, and took the lazy way out with IT'S A GIFT.
