  • Hi Johann,
Can you share a short video clip with us. Looks like you have a camera trigger issues. You mentioned that jitter in the lower half of the frames? Does the lower part look smeared? I have never seen this with any of the stock Wolverines but have seen it when experimenting with the Hawkeye camera trigger timing. What happens is this.
For the first part of the capture, the claw travels from left to right then for the second part it goes down, then from the right to the left and then back up.
In Wolverine, the trigger is provided when the claw goes up. This starts the frame capture. Since the claw is not all the way up the film is not disturbed by the claw and the camera is scanning the top part of the frame. If the claw engages with the film perforations before the camera scan is done, the film moves and the bottom of the frame gets smeared. Try lowering the exposure and see if this helps. If it does then the Hawkeye mod will fix this issue because the timing is adjustable.

The other problem is real jitter. That is when the there is a shake between the frames. Tugging on the intake reel can cause this as you suspected but I have not seen this on the units that I have. Are you maybe running faster than 2 PFS. This can happen if the ribbon connector between the controller and the power board is not installed properly or is damaged. This could also cause smearing.

      • Hello everyone! Hi Stan!

So here are two short clips.

Here is a scan, where I haven't increased the friction of the feeding reel axle and one can clearly see, the periodic wobble of of the lower part of the image (@Stan: it is not really a smearing effect, I would say):

        https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vol...ew?usp=sharing

The second clip is a scan, where the periodic wobbling of the image is not seen, but the overall jittering of the frames is quite obvious:

        https://drive.google.com/file/d/1taH...ew?usp=sharing

I am really curious, if I am the only one experiencing this behaviour - especially the first one.

        Greetings!

          Hi Johann,
this second example looks similar to my periodic vertical jitter issue:

          • The first clip Johann has a lateral jitter i.e. you can see the sprocket hole jittering from left to right. Have seen some reports similar to that. The film is moving forward and backwards not to the left and right in the gate. Possible cause could be that the film is narrower than the gate. Make sure the film type switch is all the way to the end. Also you can open up the gate and advance the film a notch at a time and observe how the claw engages the film.
The second clip is similar to Marco's issue, as Marko said it already.

            • So I remember a while back I had a clip that had lots of jitter. I rescanned it this morning with the Hawkeye setup with the UX226 camera and 16 mm lens and the jitter is still there and pretty bad actually.

I will be checking this pretty closely and doing some measurements of the claw and the film but my suspicion at this point is that it is the film stock since other clips on that reel are ok.

              • Hi, New to the forum and for scanning our family movies. I was reading the first posts from Stan in 2018, and wondered if the project still exist... aparently, yes... :-) I would like to buy a scanner, and modify it to get better results... I saw a Magnasonic FS81 at a better price than Wolverine (much better) and since I only want to have the frame and add new hardware and cam, I tought it would be ok... but then, will it work with the Hawkeye mods, and where can I get this mod ? Thank you for all this work !!!

                • Hi Richard. Looks very similar to Wolverine basic model. To the best of my knowledge the Hawkeye mod should work ok with it.

                  • Took another look at the problem clip and here is what I found.
This particular Kodak film has perforation pitch equal to 3.15mm.

Looks like the pitch should be over 4mm. The claw pitch is very close to 3.15mm. Measured this with the microscope.

This is so marginal that the claw missies the perforation and slips under the film. This causes the film to move a bit and since the trigger is still generated you get the shifted frame.

The claw pitch is controlled by the end of the travel screw that is sealed with epoxy. So off the top of my head I would say that the potential solution is to break the seal and adjust the screw. Will try this.

I also found a camera, just inquiring about the lens aboard.... https://www.ebay.com/itm/303885037410

                            • That is a pretty good price. You need a 12mm or 16mm lens.

There is a lens on it, I asked the guy about it, no answer yet... if it could be a 12mm i'd be happy... In read from you that the 16mm is more difficult to align and use, but I have R8mm to transfer, no s8 yet...
