  • They had a special day at the "Ferrymead Historic Park" today, steam train running an all that. But I am now exhausted, it was full on running the Westar and giving film away, one youngster suggested very politely, that I needed more seats. I totally agree was my reply. I lost track the number of times I threaded up the Westar, but one thing for sure, the look of fascination for 35mm film being projected, is still there and the same as when I worked at Movieland so many moons ago. The projector I should add ran a treat for close to four hours. The 20 minute edited version of "The Dolphin Tale" plus one trailer I made up, went down really well, plus no shortage of volunteers to hand rewind the film, I was more than happy to let them do that to.

The adults and kids visiting the place were all really good and were having a great time visiting the park, I did take a couple of photo's the other day when trying things out.

I love the oil-change service at the Honda Dealership where I bought my Civic: it costs about half what Jiffy-Lube costs. The thing is, while they have your car on the lift, there is some pretty serious interrogation going on! If they find they don't like the radio stations you've chosen, they'll quote you a pretty princely sum to "fix" them! This time the shoe that was waiting to drop, just about when I was expecting it, was that one of my rear brake calipers was pretty much stuck. I appreciate the warning (-especially since it was actually true...), but the thing is they wanted basically what our original mortgage payment was to fix it!

Brakes and I are not strangers (They and the plumbing in our house are my two greatest nemeses!): back in my twenties I was kind of a hot-rodder and changed my car from four-wheel drum to power front disk, so I dealt with this one myself! I brought that house payment down to less than what this one's car-payment used to be!

Projects like this are dirty, uncomfortable, tiring work. There is a great deal of standing up and getting down. The bolts that need to be removed are often hiding in dark, poorly accessible places requiring all sorts of gymnastics with the breaker bar and torque wrench to get them off and then back on. In this case they have been underneath a car for 130,000 miles and were pretty solidly rusted in place, too.

There is often some kind of surprise. Today, I found out one of my new calipers was missing the bracket for the parking brake. Of course the old caliper had one, but by the time I found this out the old caliper wasn't mounted to the car anymore and breaking those 10 year old bolts was almost impossible. I performed this really awful maneuver involving the trailer hitch on another one of my cars and a half-inch drive socket wrench extension and a great deal of grunting and the temptation towards really foul thoughts and words that finally succeeded in busting those bolts loose. NONE of my Junior-High shop teachers should ever, EVER know! (They would be crushed!)

Tonight, my garage floor is covered with sockets and ratchets and open-end wrenches that aren't back in the nice slots the DeWalt folks provided for them in their case: I got the car back on four wheels, it goes AND stops! -and will deal with this mess tomorrow! (I basically shoveled 'em all inside and closed the door: ENOUGH!)

By the way: If you wonder why is takes a couple of weeks to do CineSea in Pictures: this is an excellent example! (Life often gets in the way.) The good news is now that I've gotten my hands clean again, I can get back to that!

        • Steve when I worked for Ansett Airlines we used Free All its a brilliant product , just spray it leave it for a while then slowly work the bolts back and forth adding a bit more spray onto the part as you go. It penetrates really well I still have a can left over in my old work bench, highly recommend getting a can that's if they still make it

          • Hi Graham,

We call that "Liquid Wrench" here. I checked the shelf and I didn't have any!

The bolts in that bracket were the worst of the whole job, but this was like the third step from being done, so I pressed onward!

              • There is a lot of truth to that, after spending many past years working on British cars and British Aircraft, it was always a challenge, and that's putting it politely . The one thing British stuff all had in common, they all leaked oil to some degree and were a pain in the neck to fix.

Still have some tools left over, with British aircraft everything was split pinned and lock wired

                • Ahhh!!!

When ordinary objects approach greatness: the two D-Cell Mag-Lite!

Perhaps the greatest flashlight ever made!

-made of cast aluminum, gasketed to be water tight, spare bulb in the end cap.

Available in black, silver, red and blue and newer ones come LED equipped.

It's made in sizes down to 2 AAA-Cells and up to 4 D-Cells, but those are so heavy they should come with a shoulder strap.

If Porsche themselves made a flashlight, it would be no better than this one!

                  • Brilliant and were made to last especially when you need it to be reliable all the time, like when I was looking for an oil leak along with a inspection mirror late at night when this photo was taken many moons ago.

Luckily for the trick r Treaters I won’t be handing out rocks.

Judging from the fallen leaves out there, it looks like this will be the last time I'll be cutting my lawn for 2023. I'll leave it up to Graham to do this on my behalf in his own Hemisphere until roughly April!

Back in the days when the coming of Winter meant days of freezing my butt off walking between the buildings on some college campus or other, I really didn't like this time of year. Now that I can ride to work in a nice warm car and there are plenty of enjoyable things to do, it's just a change of seasons: maybe even something to look forward to!

(The snows rarely come before Christmas here: looks like I have a minimum of 7 weeks not having to push some red, noisy machine or other around!)

                          • Steve the growth here is out of control, I thought that when you retire you can take life easy not soit seems like every time I go out, the grass and weeds are another few inches taller than they were last night before. I can't keep up.

                                .
I saw this at a rest stop on Interstate-80 out in central Pennsylvania last summer.
I really hope he wasn't supposed to be going out for "beer" and misheard them!
