What 8mm films did I watch last night?

Tonight: a Compilation

1) N&W Articulateds - Class Y6 (300', S8 Sound) Immense steam locomotives of the Norfolk and Western haul long coal trains in the Mountains of Virginia in the 1950s. (One hundred car freight trains properly shook my wife's china closet!)

2) Journey into Spring (600', S8 Sound) We spend a Springtime in Selborne, remembering English naturalist Gilbert White and his observations of that same countryside as the season changes (-my annual tradition: about 3 weeks late his year!)

3) Confessions of A Trainspotter (1200', 16MM Sound) Michael Palin rides British Rail from London to Scotland, with side-trips into the hearts, minds and souls of rail-fans along the way.

This calls for some statistics:

This show was 2/3 Super-8, 2/3 Railways, 2/3 English, and 2/3 Elmo (ST-800M and ST-1200HD M, 16mm per Kodak Pageant)

-although neither the rail films nor the English films were on the same gauge!

-Then again if you count the nationality of the projectors, it WAS 2/3 Japanese!


I kept a rule I learned a few years ago for a three-machine rewind: no more than two machines at a time!
(Three at a time gets a little too busy!)

A few nights ago I was able to clean and screen my super copy of COLUMBO - DEED FOR A DEAD MAN.

I found it purely by chance for about $50-60 dollars, so why not! It is faded unfortunately, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying Peter Falk playing through my projector.

Sure was super 8 with a magnetic soundtrack! I'll have to go back and see what the distributor was.

I screened the 80 minute version (is a complete feature existing?) of „Cabaret“ starring Liza Minelli, Michael York and Fritz Wepper, who sadly died this March…
The colours are still intact and You hardly miss anything from the full feature. A real treasure.

Oliver, except for a slight trimming, there was an optical sound feature of this film, as I used to own it

We watched a fun little Niles reel of Sherlock Holmes trailers. As long as Niles Films stayed with black and white, they did a good job, especially being that quite often trailer releases tend to be from 35mm, instead of highly worn 16mm prints with sometimes dubious contrast.

Bought this feature new many moons ago from Derann its been quite a while now since I last screened "Beauty and the Beast" so it was a joy to watch it tonight, both picture and Stereo sound were excellent.

Closed with El Mago de Oz (Wizard of Oz) The old 400ft with colour treatment, and a Stereo sound track from 4K. Such a great nostalgia watch. My late father used to hire the 16mm print to show us at Christmas. Memories...

Due to our mayoral elections I had to watch the Bugs Bunny cartoon "Ballot Box Bunny". Thankfully a female horse was not elected "Mare" in London!!
